The facts

Sugary drinks are high in kilojoules and easy to overconsume so can lead to weight gain.

Keeping your weight within the healthy range and avoiding weight gain is an important way to reduce your cancer risk.

Being overweight or obese are risk factors for many types of cancer, including bowel, kidney, stomach, gallbladder, ovary, prostate, pancreas, oesophagus, endometrium, liver, mouth and throat and breast (post-menopause).

Around 4,000 cancers diagnosed in Australian adults each year could be attributed to being overweight or obese.


  • Carry water with you when you go out.
  • Opt for water on the table when eating out.
  • If you drink fruit juice, keep to only a small glass a day or dilute with sparkling water or ice cubes.
