Banning Fast Food

The facts

Cutting down on ‘fast foods’ and other processed foods high in fat, starches or sugars helps control kilojoule intake and maintain a healthy weight.

Fast foods can displace nutrient rich foods such as vegetables and wholegrains that help protect us from cancer.

Keeping your weight within the healthy range and avoiding weight gain is an important way to reduce your cancer risk.

Being overweight or obese are risk factors for many types of cancer, including bowel, kidney, stomach, gallbladder, ovary, prostate, pancreas, oesophagus, endometrium, liver, mouth and throat and breast (post-menopause).

Around 4,000 cancers diagnosed in Australian adults each year could be attributed to being overweight or obese.

Tips

  • Plan your meals and put together a shopping list so that when it comes to cooking you are ready to go.
  • Cook in bulk and freeze for ‘fast food night’ or make a base that can be used for a different meal the next night.
  • Collect some favourite recipes that are for quick meals.
  • Keep some pantry staples handy like tinned corn, ready cooked brown rice and canned tuna to whip up a fast meal.
